Background:

Mobasher can comment on a variety of topics in astronomy and cosmology, including dark matter and dark energy; the formation and evolution of galaxies; star formation activity; the expansion of the universe; search for and discovery of the most distant galaxies; and the Hubble Space Telescope. He came to UCR in 2007 from the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. Previously, he worked at Imperial College, University of London, United Kingdom.

Recognitions:

Mobasher was the lead author on a paper that was ranked by Science News and Discovery magazines as one of the top 100 most outstanding science results of 2005. This was the second-highest research paper cited in astrophysics in 2005. He was the core member of the team studying dark energy with the Hubble Space Telescope. He has been the core member of the most extensive galaxy surveys recently performed by space- and ground-based telescopes. Other honors include:
  • Khwarizmi International Award, first prize in basic sciences, 2007
  • Science Achievement Award, European Space Agency, 2004
  • Award for outstanding technical accomplishments for the Third Servicing Mission (SM3) to the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA, 2002

Mobasher gives public lectures on astronomy, including to elementary and high school students.
