Background:
Professor Cort's has lectured widely throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Australia on such topics as: multiculturalism; diversity in the media; media literacy; Hispanic culture and history; film; and the implications of diversity for education, government, and private business. His own heritage, part Mexican and part Eastern European, gives him an understanding about crossing cultural borders. His latest book, The Children Are Watching: How the Media Teach about Diversity, was published in March 2000 by Teachers College Press at Columbia University. Using examples from current films, television shows and newspapers, he explains how children are taught about race and gender as much from pop culture as from school and home.
