Background:
With the approach of the end of Arnold Schwarzenegger's term as California's Governor, Professor Bowler can look back and talk about the legacy of the actor-turned-Governor. Brought to the office in a recall election that was more show business than politics, Schwarzenegger found himself constrained by the state's own structures.
Bowler studies how voters sometimes make a "strategic" choice for a third-party candidate in the primary even if they will vote for a major party candidate in the general election. The co-author of Demanding Choices: Opinions and Voting in Direct Democracy, Bowler has studied elections all over the world. He analyzes the effect of third party candidates on elections.
