Biography

Emma Simmons is an associate dean of student affairs in the UCR School of Medicine and family physician with an interest in improving health equity. Her area of research has been in the offering and acceptance of HIV screening among underserved populations.

Underrepresented minorities have not traditionally shared equally in all of the advances that the medical care system in the U.S. has to offer. Current efforts to increase the supply of historically underrepresented physicians remain an important but ongoing challenge. This challenge, in addition to other socioeconomic factors, has an impact on the overall health of our country. She is available to talk about health disparities in medicine.

Simmons completed her bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Tougaloo College in Mississippi, then earned her M.D. degree and master of public health degree at Brown University.  She was previously  assistant dean for Minority Medical Affairs at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School and is a member of the American Academy of Family Practitioners. She speaks English.
