Biography

A specialist in Islamic studies, Muhamad Ali received his B.A. in Islamic studies from the State Islamic University (Indonesia), an M.Sc. from the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Edinburgh, and a Ph.D. in history (Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the world) from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Ali has taught courses such as Qur’anic studies, Islam and international relations, Muslim politics, and Orientalism. Among the courses he has taught are “Introduction to Asian Religions,” “Reading the Qur’an,” “Islam in Southeast Asia,” and “Introduction to Islam.”

On Islam

Ali can comment on a wide variety of subjects pertaining to Islam, including  gender relationship, Islam and the West, interfaith dialog and global education, Islam and politics, jihad, violence and peace, religious pluralism, and other religio-cultural issues.
